William Louis Petersen (Evanston, 21 februari 1953) is een Amerikaanse acteur. Van 2000 tot begin 2009 speelde hij de rol van Gil Grissom in de televisieserie CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Levensloop

Petersen bracht zijn middelbareschooltijd door aan de Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho, en ontdekte zijn acteertalent tijdens zijn studie aan de Idaho State University, waar hij een football-studiebeurs had.

Hij sloot zich aan bij de Steppenwolf Theatre Company, die overigens opgericht werd door Gary Sinise, bekend van CSI: NY. Verder speelde hij in een aantal regionale producties, waaronder A Streetcar Named Desire.

Zijn filmcarrière begon met een klein rolletje in de film Thief uit 1981. Later zou hij een rol in de film Platoon hebben afgeslagen omdat het weinig betaalde en hij geen zin had om wekenlang trainingen op de Filipijnen te volgen. In plaats daarvan speelde hij mee in de televisiefilm Long gone uit 1987.

Op 3 februari 2009 kreeg Petersen een ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Privéleven

In 1974 trouwde hij met Joanne Brady, van wie hij in 1981 scheidde. Hij kreeg met haar een dochter. In 2002 verloofde hij zich met Gina Cirone, met wie hij in 2003 trouwde in het Italiaanse Petrignano. Ze werden in 2011 ouders van een tweeling, een zoon en een dochter, die ze kregen via een draagmoeder.
