In the Hot Seat, pubblicato nel 1994, è il nono e ultimo album in studio del gruppo musicale britannico Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Produzione
Greg Lake, nella sua autobiografia pubblicata postuma, racconta che la realizzazione di In The Hot Seat obbedì a meri obblighi contrattuali verso la casa discografica.[1] Il gruppo pertanto dovette anche completarlo entro un termine stabilito, malgrado problemi di salute sia di Carl Palmer che di Keith Emerson. Palmer in quel periodo soffriva di sindrome del tunnel carpale, per la quale fu operato subito dopo le registrazioni;[2] Emerson era invece affetto una distonia focale che gli consentiva di muovere soltanto tre dita della mano destra e che lo costrinse a eseguire tutte le parti con la sinistra, utilizzando la tecnica della sovraincisione.[3] Le note sulla ristampa del 2011 hanno rivelato inoltre che alla programmazione MIDI sia delle tastiere che dei campionamenti di batteria contribuirono altri musicisti.[4]
Il trio per giunta era a corto di materiale e ricorse perciò a un team di cinque autori aggiuntivi – tra cui il produttore del disco, Keith Olsen – i quali cofirmarono sei brani su dieci.[5] Escludendo anche Man in the Long Black Coat, in quanto cover di un brano di Bob Dylan del 1989, le tracce inedite composte senza aiuto esterno furono soltanto tre: Hand of Truth, Daddy e Street War.[5] Per le suddette ragioni, Palmer in seguito definì l'album: «Un disastro totale»[2] e Olsen riassunse così l'intera esperienza: «Niente canzoni, niente preparazione, nessun'etica del lavoro».[6]
In coda al CD, come bonus track, fu inserito un rifacimento in studio di Pictures at an Exhibition, registrato dal trio un anno prima del resto dell'album, già edito sul cofanetto antologico The Return of the Manticore (1993) e per l'occasione rimissato in Dolby Surround.[5]
Accoglienza
In the Hot Seat fu l'album in studio meno venduto in assoluto nella carriera di Emerson, Lake & Palmer e l'unico in particolare a non entrare nella Billboard 200 statunitense.[1]
