Ivan Asen I, juga dikenal dengan nama Asen I atau Yohanes Asen I (bahasa Bulgaria: Иван Асен I) adalah Tsar Kekaisaran Bulgaria Kedua yang berkuasa dari tahun 1187 atau 1188 hingga 1196 bersama dengan kakaknya, Peter II. Ia adalah anak seorang gembala yang kaya dari wilayah pegunungan Paristrion. Menurut sumber-sumber primer, Asen dan kakaknya adalah orang Vlach, tetapi kemungkinan besar mereka juga memiliki nenek moyang Bulgaria dan Cuman.

Asen dan Peter (yang masih dikenal dengan nama Theodor pada saat itu) menemui Kaisar Romawi Timur Isaakius II Angelus di Trakia pada tahun 1185, dan meminta tanah di Pegunungan Balkan. Sang Kaisar menolak permintaan mereka, sehingga dua bersaudara ini mengajak rekan-rekan mereka untuk memberontak melawan Kekaisaran Romawi Timur. Peter dimahkotai sebagai Tsar menjelang akhir tahun. Setelah Isaakius II mengalahkan mereka pada awal tahun 1186, Asen dan Peter melarikan diri dengan menyeberangi Sungai Donau, tetapi mereka kembali pada musim gugur dan ditemani oleh bala bantuan pasukan Cuman. Mereka merebut Paristrion dan mulai menjarah wilayah sekitar.

Asen menjadi salah satu penguasa bersama dengan kakaknya pada tahun 1187 atau 1188. Peter berdamai dengan Romawi Timur, tetapi Asen masih meneruskan pertempuran. Mereka lalu membagi kerajaan mereka: Asen memperoleh wilayah Tarnovo. Asen kemudian melancarkan serangan ke wilayah Romawi Timur dan menguasai wilayah di sepanjang Sungai Struma pada awal tahun 1190-an. Namun, ia tewas ditikam oleh seorang boyar yang bernama Ivanko pada tahun 1196.
