Cthulhu adalah dewa fiktif yang diciptakan oleh H. P. Lovecraft dan pertama kali diperkenalkan dalam cerita pendek "The Call of Cthulhu" yang diterbitkan dalam majalah Weird Tales pada tahun 1928. Menurut Lovecraft, Cthulhu adalah "monster yang agak menyerupai manusia, tetapi memiliki kepala seperti gurita dengan wajah yang dipenuhi peraba, tubuh yang bersisik dan tampak elastik, cakar-cakar besar di kaki depan dan belakang, dan sayap yang tipis dan panjang di belakang."^[1] Cthulhu terkubur di kota bawah laut R'lyeh, dan menunggu saat untuk bangkit kembali dan menghancurkan peradaban manusia agar dapat menguasai planet Bumi.
